How much does a pylon sign cost in Toronto?
Pylon sign cost in Toronto has no standard price. A pylon is an engineered, permitted structure with a footing, so the number depends on height, face size, tenant panels, lighting and the site. The published guides we checked also stop short of a single figure, which is why every pylon is quoted per job, from a photo of the site.
A pylon sign is the sign drivers read before they reach your entrance. It is also the biggest single purchase in most sign budgets, so it helps to know what is in the price before you ask for quotes. For what the signs look like and how a project runs, see our pylon signs page.
What changes the price
- Height and face size. A taller, larger sign needs a stronger structure and a deeper footing. Height and area also decide how the sign is engineered and permitted.
- Number of tenant panels. A multi-tenant plaza sign has a panel for each tenant. Panels built as changeable inserts let the sign survive tenant changes without being rebuilt.
- Lighting. Non-lit, internally lit and externally lit signs are built differently. Our pylons use LED lighting on a timer or photocell.
- Footing and site conditions. Paving, underground services and soil all change the work needed to set the structure.
- Electrical run. The distance from the building to the sign decides how much trenching and wiring is needed.
- Engineering, survey and permit fees. The structure and footing are designed and stamped by an engineer, and the City charges a permit fee.
- New sign or reface. Replacing the faces on an existing pylon is a different job from building a new structure.
A published pylon cost guide from another sign company (Blink Signs, June 2026) makes the same point: it prices pylons by project scope rather than a single average, and advises comparing the total installed scope, not just the fabrication price.
City of Toronto permit fees
A ground sign that identifies a business on its own property needs a first party sign permit under the City's Sign By-law (Municipal Code Chapter 694). The City's 2026 fee is $37.71 per square metre of sign, and the City puts the minimum for a sign permit at $334.53, including a $70.67 building permit fee. For ground signs, the City's first party sign permit page asks for the height of the sign above surrounding grade, its distance from property lines and street lines, foundation design and attachment details, soil parameters, and a tree declaration. A ground sign with a finished height over 7.5 m above the adjacent ground also needs a commitment to general review. Our Toronto sign permit guide covers the full application.
If your property does not meet the by-law, a sign variance is needed first. The City's variance fee for a first party sign is $971.16 per application, from the same fees page.
Why a photo gets a better answer
Two pylons with the same panels can cost very different amounts because of the setback, the soil and the distance to power. A photo of the site, the address, the number of tenants and the approximate height you want lets us look at the by-law and the site before giving a number.
Comparing quotes
Ask each company whether the quote includes:
- the drawing and your approval before fabrication;
- the structural engineering and footing;
- the City permit application and permit fee;
- the electrical run and installation;
- how tenant panels are changed later, and who makes them.
Cheaper than a new pylon: re-facing
If the structure is sound, new faces or cabinets on the existing pylon are often faster to permit and cheaper than a new sign. Send a photo and the panel size and we will tell you what is possible. A monument sign, a low sign on a solid base, is another option on some sites; see our pylon signs page for how the two compare.
How to get a quote
- Send a photo of the site and the address.
- Tell us how many tenants the sign needs and whether you are re-facing an existing structure.
- We come back with a drawing and a quote that spells out engineering, permit and installation.
We do not publish prices for pylon signs; every sign is quoted per job. For how pricing works on lit letters, see our channel letter sign cost guide.
