Pylon signs that get your plaza noticed from the road

Freestanding signs for plazas, car dealers, gas stations and roadside businesses. We handle the engineering, permits, footing and install, then come back when tenants change.

What a pylon sign is

A pylon sign is a freestanding sign on its own structure, placed near the road so drivers can read it before they reach your entrance. For a business that sits back from the street or shares a plaza, it is often the sign that brings people in.

How a pylon project runs

  1. Site check. We look at the setback, sightlines from both directions, underground services and where power can come from.
  2. Design and engineering. You approve the look; an engineer designs the structure and footing for wind load.
  3. Permit. We prepare the drawings and file with the city. Some sites also need landlord or site-plan approval.
  4. Build and install. Cabinets and cladding are made in our shop. On site we pour the footing, set the structure, wire it and switch it on.

Built for tenant changes

In a plaza the sign changes more often than the building. We design pylons with standard-size tenant inserts, keep the drawings on file and can make a matching panel years later.

Where it works

Common uses for pylon signs

Multi-tenant plazas

One structure, a panel for each tenant. New tenants get a new insert, not a new sign.

Single-business sites

Car dealers, gas stations, restaurants and industrial buildings set back from the road.

Re-facing an existing pylon

Often the structure is fine and only the cabinets or faces need replacing. It is usually faster to permit and much cheaper than a new sign.

How it works

From photo to installed, with one team.

  1. Photo and brief

Send a photo and what you need. We measure and check the by-law and landlord rules.

  2. Drawing and price

A scaled drawing on a photo of your building, with a fixed price and schedule.

  3. Permit and build

We file the permit and fabricate in our Scarborough shop.

  4. Install

Our own crew installs, connects and tests it.

Pricing

What affects the price

Every sign is made to measure, so we quote each one. These are the things that move the number most.

  • Height and sign area, which also set the engineering requirements
  • Number of tenant panels and whether they are lit
  • Footing and site conditions (paving, underground services, soil)
  • Electrical run from the building to the sign
  • Engineering, survey and permit fees

Questions

Pylon signs: common questions

How tall can a pylon sign be in Toronto?
Height, area and setback come from the city's sign by-law and depend on zoning, road frontage and the site. We confirm what your property allows before design starts, so the sign you approve is one that can be built.
Do pylon signs need engineering?
Yes. A freestanding sign has to handle wind load, so the structure and footing are designed and stamped by a professional engineer as part of the permit application. We coordinate that for you.
Can several tenants share one pylon sign?
Yes, and that is the most common use. Tenant panels are built as changeable inserts so the sign survives turnover without being rebuilt.
Can you replace the panels on our existing pylon?
Yes. We make replacement tenant panels and re-face older pylons. Send a photo and the panel size (or we can measure) and we will quote it.
Who is responsible for locating underground services before digging?
Before any footing is dug, utility locates are requested through Ontario One Call. We arrange this as part of the installation.
